Sure, Food Wars! is ultimately a comedy, but the Azami arc has had a darker tone so far, and it feels like Yuto Tsukuda wants us to really believe Azami is a deadly force and I’m just not feeling that threat. I still think it was a mistake to let Ryo beat Rentaro here, and it undermined a lot of the potential threat Azami had building. But before that Azami berates both Rentaro and Mea Yanai for failing to make a clean sweep during the Shokugeki. Now, diving into Chapter 160 we pick up from last time, with Azami confronting Alice Nakiri. However, the Shokugeki in Chapter 164 does have me wondering just how exactly it’s conclusion will play out. Sure they’ve dismantled dozens of cooking clubs, taken over the institute, and forced out a lot of characters, but right now I don’t believe any of Soma’s incoming competition is able to defeat him. I feel that recent Shokugeki haven’t managed to establish Azami and his crew as true threats. There’s parts of it, namely the presentation of the villains and how ‘threatening’ they come across that I take issue with. Can Soma and his friends return the institute to what it once was or will they too eventually be crushed beneath Azami’s far-reaching ideals? Review:īefore we begin I just want to say I’m generally enjoying this arc, for the most part.

After a series of Shokugeki’s, many of the Institute’s cooking societies/clubs have been dismantled and Azami’s plans are put into full affect. Despite this victory Soma and the Polar dorm crew are a long way from stopping Azami’s far reaching plans for the Academy. When the Polar Dormitory is also in danger of becoming shut down, Soma strikes back, challenging council of ten member Etsuya Eizan and defeating him in a Shokugeki. He sets into motion the complete dismantlement of all the Academy’s clubs, all in an effort to bring about a perfect, uniform cooking where only the best chefs create new dishes and the masses have but to learn them. He sets about turning the elite council of ten against the Academy’s head, Erina’s grandfather, Senzaemon Nakiri and electing Azami as his successor. But the Totsuki institute faces a major upheavel as Erina’s father, Azami, returns from banishment. He’s overcome the student body thinning training camp, competed in the school wide tournament, survived the Stagiaire event, and more. Since that time Soma has faced countless challenges at the Totsuki Culinary Academy. Joichiro issues Soma a challenge, that if he can survive the most elite culinary school in Japan, where only the top 10% manage to graduate, then Joichiro will acknowledge him as worthy of taking over the restaurant. But just as Soma graduates from middle school his father, Joichiro Yukihira, shuts the restaurant down to travel around the globe and cook for the privileged. Synopsis: Soma Yukihira dreams of becoming a full-time chef at his father’s neighborhood restaurant and to one day surpass his father’s culinary skills. Damn it! Who keeps letting their child flick paint all over the Shonen Jump covers!?
